#PrimarySTEMchat 24th August 2017

My BIG Takeaway!

Share, share, share with your students! Encourage them to share and observe any STEM in their books or screens. Teach them that Digi Tech can be for fun but also for enjoyable learning, whether through viewing or sharing! oh! and make sure to teach them the right way to use Digi Tech of course too! Integrate using ICT responsibly into these sorts of lessons as well as many others! Let’s help our students become safe and responsible digital citizens!

That was a rather long BIG takeaway, wasn’t it… A lot of thoughts and ramblings going through my head tonight.

If I come across a documentary that has really engaged me I will share them with my students. I have watched a lot of Netflix lately and I was able to help a student (as a TRT) by recommending a doco on the Hadron Collider (Particle Fever) on Netflix for a project he was working on. It can be a small thing like that, that will help a student and also for them to realise you do care about them as a learner. Some students can find this concept very hard. You may not share the same interests but it doesn’t mean you can’t show an interest!

I have recently watched Chasing Coral and Mission Blue. Two great ocean based documentaries that I have recommended people to watch (Teachers and Students) through my Instagram account where both Ts and Ss follow me. Chasing Ice is my next doco to watch! Seriously, go watch these!! Watched them multiple times now 🙂

We discussed things to do to encourage students to share things related to STEM (or anything really) that they would recommend people to watch/read/listen to. Below are some things I came up with/were discussed in the chat

  • Something like a wonder wall. Instead of sharing wonder’s they would share recommendations.
  • Digital space: example, using google slides (or something that can be shared with all students) they can add what they would recommend and why they are.
  • Have a sharing time. Bring something in or tell us about something you enjoy that has STEM in it. Books, tv show, movie or a clip from youtube. Have a discussion as a class afterward.
